Bush Seeks Destruction of Democratic Party

Many of us have often wondered what a second Bush term would look like. Predictions of war in Iran and three new conservative justices on the Supreme Court are usually the most dire ones, but Salon brings us the first comprehensive look at Bush/Rove plans and it's scarier than anyone so far has imagined: "A second-term Bush agenda will constantly impale Democrats on the dilemma of abandoning their poorer, sicker, older and minority groups, or seeing their better-off, healthier and younger members lured off to the other party. If it sounds like a political nightmare for the Democrats, that's because that's what it is planned to be." In other words, Bush's re-election might mean no less than the destruction of the Democratic Party and everything it has accomplished.

Also in the news has been reports that in response to McCain's sharp criticism of the Swiftboat smear ads, Bush will now work with McCain to eliminate these "shadowy 527 groups" that supposedly undermine the McCain-Feingold campaign reform laws. Now there are plenty of conservative 527s who aren't gonna like this, but the reason they would do this anyway is because of the liberals ones like Moveon which have really transformed election politics for the Democrats. It's the only thing that can really counter that massive special interest money advantage that Republicans have over Democrats. The law already got rid of "soft money" and now if it gets rid of 527s, Democrats will be at a considerable disadvantage. Which, of course, is the whole point.
