"The Lesbian Flap"

Most of you probably have heard about the apparent anger from the Cheney family over Kerry mentioning that Mary Cheney is a lesbian, since the major media would rather talk about that than the fact Bush claimed he never said Osama wasn't a priority. While I think it would have been wise for Kerry to mention Gephardt's daughter as well, it's not hard to see the Republicans are just feigning anger here, as the leader of the Log Cabin Republicans has said. Timothy Noah wrote a good article in Slate explaining how Kerry wasn't gay-baiting, but rather trying to shame Bush for gay-baiting. The hypocricy is particularly abhorrent when people consider recent remarks from Republican Alan Keyes, calling Cheney's daughter a "selfish hedonist," who suffered no response from the Cheney family over that rather more insulting remark than sympathetically explaining your daughter is just being who she is.

Speaking of the media, as I'm one of the few who saw this live, Stewart was on "Crossfire" and just went off on the guys, and by extension, the rest
of the biased media. He accused them of "partisan hackery" and ended up calling Tucker Carlson a "dick." It was great. As I was watching it I noticeed Jon was a little nervous at first, like he was thinking "I can step back now or I can go for it." Well, he went for
it.

That's a pretty good article. It does amaze me that they can be so offended by Kerry even bringing her up, but not by some of the things that fellow Republicans say about gays in general. It is a highly personal issue no doubt, but frankly I have the feeling that Cheney's never played his daughter as an issue only because that doesn't work in the Republican party. And I have no problem with Kerry bringing her up to shame her Cheney and Bush for trying to use a stand against gay marriage to rally theirp arty.
