Again, when the people's votes are counted - Democrats win!
AP reports "The Montana Supreme Court on Tuesday overturned a decision that determined a disputed legislative race was tied, likely giving Democrats control of the state House of Representatives."
It creates a 50-50 tie which means the next House speaker likely will be from the party of Democratic Gov.-elect Brian Schweitzer. The party that controls the governor's office in Montana breaks ties in electing House speakers. Democrats control the Montana Senate as well, giving the party complete statewide control!
This is where it begins guys... The great untold story of the elections has been despite their bad national losses, the Democrats had great statewide gains, especially in places that tend to vote Republican. Colorado, which went for Bush, voted in a new Democratic Senator and completely flipped the legislature (Kerry wasn't too far behind also). Here, Montana, usually a very dependable red state in national elections (except for a Clinton win in '92 and Democratic Senator Baucus) that Bush won in a landslide this year, voted in a Democratic governor and flipped the House. And other states have seen similiar progress.
This also confirms for me that the Democrats should be targeting the western United States, not trying to hold on the South which this year replaced 4 retiring Democrats (excluding Zell Miller) with Republicans giving them control of the U.S. Senate, including Lousiana for the first time since Reconstruction. Not to mention that not a single one came anywhere close to voting for Kerry. But like those Republicans took advantage of the changeover in the South, so should we in these regions.
