Bush attacks education

(I've decided to post articles from my school paper because I think it helps connects these budget cuts to a very real level with people.)

"Controversy is brewing in the NT community and nationwide as a result of President George W. Bush's proposed 2006 budget. The budget calls for the elimination of Talent Search, Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math and Science, three of four federally funded college opportunity programs that serve 455,000 middle and high school students nationwide," the NT Daily reported.

A guest columnist David Hallmon wrote a good article in defense of the programs, and an editorial argues President Bush is giving NCLB underserving precendence. Even the Communications Director of the UNT chapter of the Young Conservatives of Texas, Michele Connole (whom I personally know) who is generally in favor of abolishing government programs, has defended TRIO.

Anyway, I think the above speaks for itself.

What's makes it even sadder is that these cuts won't do us any good. The amount that can be saved by cutting programs like this, programs that make a real difference in the lives of thousands of people, in no way can make up for the billions lost in tax cuts.
