President Bush's budget will propose slashing grants to local law enforcement agencies and cutting spending for environmental protection, American Indian schools and home-heating aid for the poor, The Associated Press reports.
At the same time, Bush will propose $419.3 billion for the Pentagon for next year, a 4.8 percent boost over this year, and that's not even counting the supplemental money that could be requested for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that could be up to a $100 billion dollars.
This is all in response to the fact that Bush's reckless spending over his first term has led to the largest defecit in U.S. history. So in an effort to please fiscal conservatives (a phrase which has gone from redundant to oxymoronic), Bush is proposing this "tight" budget. And what does he cut? Stuff people need like law-enforcement and heat. What doesn't he cut? Defense spending. In fact, he's raising it. Why? Are we going to be fighting another war soon? And hey, you know what? Maybe we don't need that "Star Wars" system (especially when it doesn't work), ok? The one that doesn't work? Maybe we can spend it on people instead.
