The wrongness of the ban on gay marriage is evident to all those who aren't blind to the fact that all humans deserve equal rights on all things. We had a big Christian turnout to support the amendment, not to mention the millions of unthinking Texans who blindly obey their conservative leaders. It never fails to surprise me how people will always buy into irrational arguments because they simply deny that the person giving them the argument could be wrong. As has been stated many times, people are sheep. But the most surprising thing about this fiasco to me is that Texans have, in this case, voted for themselves to have less rights than before.
I'm sure most people haven't thought about it in that light. They have thought, "Well, we're banning gay marriage, so that doesn't affect me." Well, not true. Not that this hasn't already been done, but what you supported was the state of Texas' right to define marriage, and furthermore, limit civil unions and other equivalent contracts between people. Guess what I saw on the front page of the Dallas Morning News yesterday?
Gay marriage foes tackle divorce next
After Prop 2 success, conservatives also push national amendment
I can't overstate my contempt for the people who passed this amendment. Let me tell you all something that you should have learned a long time ago: If you take away freedom from one, you take away freedom from all.
Now, despite the anger I feel over this issue, I am comforted by the knowledge that this will be overturned. Maybe not this year, maybe not in 5 years, but it will be overturned within our lifetimes. Someday, Americans will decide that all Americans are equal, including gays, just as we did with African-Americans. Whites used to think that blacks were genetically inferior, or descendants of the sinful son, and for these reasons held them down for hundreds of years. These days, even non-Christian straights can't get over their disgust for homosexuality, and demand that we all agree that it's not a valid way of life. Just as the tide turned as Americans finally grew enlightened enough to recognize that the color of one's skin doesn't affect one's degree of humanity, just so they will someday realize that one's sexuality has nothing to do with one's humanity, or American-ness.
That, and someday we'll get tired of the bozos who think they have the right to govern our lives. As immoral as I think the amendment is, I think it's even worse that we are continually fighting those who wish to erode our freedoms. There is nothing worse in this country than those that tell you they have the right to govern your personal life. I'm absolutely certain that someday enough Americans will get fed up with those kind of people that all such restrictive laws will be overturned. Even here in Texas.

Yes, like segretation before it, the courts will have to stand up for people's rights...
Amen brother.
By the way, I find the title of this post particularly amusing.
