New President for Liberia

You can add Liberia to the list of countries that have elected women as president before the United States. I don't want to read too much into this of course. We have many, many strong women leaders in politics in America, including some who are on the short list for making a run at the presidency in 2008, and Liberian politics aren't American politics. But it seems odd to me that in the developing world, in societies that are much more chauvinistic and male-dominated then ours, women somehow are elected president again and again. Is there any question that in our country, there are millions of people who would not vote for a woman because she's a woman, because they have doubts about a woman's ability to be president? We've done a great job including women in all ranks in our society, but for all our progress we still seem to have serious problems with women in charge.

Just goes to show the state of women in America. Or rather, the state of sexism.

This is arrogance and ignorance of African culture. There have been many women heads of state in Africa before this one that were not elected. Women from the ruling classes have always had leadership roles. America is more patriarchal than much of Africa. African societies trace their family lineage through their mother instead of their father, women could also easily leave their husbands return to their families and marry again. How's that for women being submersive in Africa. Do your research before you insult people you clearly know nothing about.

Good God you're an idiot. What the hell are you talking about? Here we are saying how good it is that in Africa they can elect a woman for President and here in America we can't. How about you don't comment anymore because you're too stupid to understand what anyone's talking about?
