Family Reunited

For all the stories of tragedy and heartbreak that have flowed from the devestation wrought by Katrina, there are now and again some stories of impossible good fortune and joy. The Dallas Morning News gives us this story of a little girl lost for nearly seven months after Katrina, and her joyful reunion with a family that had nearly given up hope for finding her:

Seeing 4-year-old Cortez Stewart giggle and run around the yard Wednesday, it's hard to believe she was missing and feared drowned for more than six months after Hurricane Katrina.

But you can see it in her mother's eyes.

Lisa Stewart, 31, was separated from Cortez at the height of the disaster and had no idea where the child was until last Thursday. Ms. Stewart had almost given up. Then, the telephone woke her up in her temporary home in Houston, a voice told her Cortez had been found, and her shrieks of joy woke up the whole house.

"A miracle," she said.

Indeed.
