The House Appropriations Committee voted on party lines to send the Iraq measure attached the defense supplemental bill to the full House, but Republicans voted to block a final vote on the similar measure in the Senate. Senate Majority Leader has indicated he will try to attach the measure to the defense supplemental as the House did.
Republicans think they were clever in allowing the Senate vote to go forward, knowing they had to votes to block it later. No doubt the media will say this is a victory for them, but I disagree. Republicans will rue this day.
A recent Bloomberg poll conducted by the Los Angeles Times found that 55% of those surveyed supported a withdrawal of all U.S. combat troops from Iraq by March 31, 2008 (same as stipulated in the Senate bill). Americans will know that Republicans voted in favor of an indefinite committment to this war and supporting President Bush over a real change in U.S. policy in Iraq. These Republicans will feel the pressure to change their vote in the future very, very soon...

The Republicans just don't get it. I don't know if they're waiting for the surge to work, or simply have not accepted how much the American public has soured on the war, but indeed they are going to rue the day they realized that they came around far too late.
