The Dallas Mavericks are back in town, opening up training camp week with media day on Monday, and gearing up for a long slog to playoffs redemption next May. Dallas, a team that made no substantial changes over the off-season, is looking to a few players to shoulder the burden of improving their changes for another Finals appearance. But the Mavs have a long way to go to be regarded even as a serious contender for the championship, at least according to some critics.
Tonight FC Dallas battles the New England Revolution for the crown in one of the most irrelevant soccer competitions in the world, the U.S. Open Cup. Tonight's game is a gut check for the squad and it's possible a victory over the powerful Revolution could spur a change in FCD's fortunes and propel them strongly into the MLS playoffs. But given their recent form, that's at best an unlikely proposition. I'm not holding my breath, but I will be watching.
