Secessionists meeting in Tennessee...but why?

I just thought this was funny since a secession movement is plainly not going to succeed any time this century, if ever.

In an unlikely marriage of desire to secede from the United States, two advocacy groups from opposite political traditions — New England and the South — are sitting down to talk.

Tired of foreign wars and what they consider right-wing courts, the Middlebury Institute wants liberal states like Vermont to be able to secede peacefully.

Now that's a real "strange bedfellows" story.

The U.S. Constitution does not explicitly prohibit secession, but few people think it is politically viable.

Uh, what? Was this not decided by the Civil War?

I would say both the Constitutional and political viability of secession was quite thorougly repudiated by that little war.
