Apply Inside
How on Earth did I miss the fact, revealed at Jose Padilla's trial, that at one time at least membership in Al Qaeda required filling out a job application? The first response of course is to chuckle, but I think there is an interesting question to be posed here about the need of even informal terrorist organizations to operate with a measure of bureaucracy. In an organization tens of thousands strong, you do need some way to check the bona fides of those who come into your organization, and what is more efficient than the application?
