Deserved Upgrade

For all of our UTA alumni readers, some good news for the UTA Men's basketball program:

UT-Arlington announced Thursday plans to build a new, 6,500-seat basketball arena that will cost about $73 million and is expected to be finished by the spring of 2012.

This has long been needed at UTA. The basketball teams had played on a stage at Texas Hall for many, many years and it was a running joke. No teams wanted to schedule games with UTA at home and it caused the men's and women's basketball teams to go on long, non-conference road trips every year. Maybe soon quality non-conference opponents, such as a few Big 12 schools and such, will want to come and play basketball in Arlington.

Yes, you read that correctly. They play on a stage. As in a stage that was otherwise designed to host plays and musicals. If you can even imagine how ridiculous that is, I can promise you the reality is worse. So it's about time these guys got an upgrade, especially given the unprecedented success they enjoyed last season.

UPDATE: You can see an artist's rendering of what the new center will look like here.
