The Conductor

I recommend this fascinating portrait of Valery Gergiev, a Russian musician who definitely fits the mold of the larger-than-life conductor. His story is one of the intersection of politics and music in Russia, where even today classical music thrives largely as a result of the patronage of powerful politicians, a phenomenon which remained unchanged in Russia even through the rise and fall of the Soviet Union.
