Our favorite resident "liberal hawk" Christopher Hitchens has written a trashier piece than usual at Slate, accusing Democrats of wanting things to go badly in Iraq to increase Kerry's chances of winning, among other things. Of course, Hitchens is a wimp and won't post his email, so I'm going to ridicule him here.
Hitchens' logic basically goes like this. Bush is fighting terror. Kerry is fighting Bush. Kerry is on the side of the terrorists. Saying we are hoping for more bad news is idiotic and circular logic. It's not as if we wish or wished things would go bad and they do/did. Bad stuff has happened! And we are rightfully criticizing this administration for their many mistakes. Hitchens thinks he is so clever because he sees the obvious political reality that if things go bad in Iraq, Kerry's chances of winning increase and vice versa. Of course, using rhetorical tricks he has borrowed from his new bedfellows, this means Kerry/the Democrats want bad things to happen in Iraq. No, Mr. Hitchens, Iraq is going to hell right now, and that's exactly why we need Kerry and not Bush - the man who caused this mess in the first place. He is just being an a** by righting off Kerry's chances and he knows it. That's why he wrote this article in the first place.
I don't believe the Bush administration has Osama in chains like King Kong. Nor do I believe they know (exactly) where he is. However, it is obvious the administration has put pressure on Pakistan to crackdown on terrorists in the last few months for political reasons. It certainly isn't the first time.
Hitchens says he is not worried about Osama and "Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is a far more ruthless and dangerous jihadist." Well, I might agree. So when then does Hitches believe Bush a good terror fighter, and one who doesn't play politics with the war, when he has three chances to take out Zarqawi but chose not to take them because he felt his capture/death would undermine the case for the Iraq war?
Hitchens needs to admit he just enjoys being contrary and controversial, especially to the liberal establishment he has known for so long. He knows his argument is wrong and hurtful, and he espouses it anyway.
It's really gonna suck for him when in five weeks he becomes officially irrelevant.
