Yeah, we've all heard it. Those damn people in the Northeast want to take all your money and tell you what to do. That rhetoric works wonders for Republicans in "the Heartland" - too bad it isn't true. A new report shows which states benefit from federal tax and spending policies, and which states foot the bill (thankfully, Texas is somewhere in the middle):
"The report shows that of the 32 states (and the District of Columbia) that are 'winners' - receiving more in federal spending than they pay in federal taxes - 76% are Red States that voted for George Bush in 2000. Indeed, 17 of the 20 (85%) states receiving the most federal spending per dollar of federal taxes paid are Red States... In contrast, of the 16 states that are 'losers' - receiving less in federal spending than they pay in federal taxes - 69% are Blue States that voted for Al Gore in 2000. Indeed, 11 of the 14 (79%) of the states receiving the least federal spending per dollar of federal taxes paid are Blue States."
While a some of this pork certainly comes from military expenditures, a lot of it is in the form of agricultural subsidies. For all their talk about shrinking government, basically, red America is living on welfare, and the payments are coming from the liberal elitists they rail against in blue America. Being liberal myself, I wouldn't even mind that so much if they'd just take the money and shut up, instead of taking the money and then venting endlessly about the corrupt, liberal, anti-American values of the people who make it possible. It's nothing more than a scam, no matter where you live, and it's time people wised up to it.

What's sad is that this isn't even new information, but most people don't even know it. Republicans have once again been very effective at twisting the truth.
