Zig Zag Zell (and other thoughts on the RNC)

So here's a quick recap of the Republican convention so far:

Terror
Terror
Terror
9-11
9-11
John Kerry sucks
God Bless America

No discussion of issues. No acknowledgement of reality.

No to be serious, so far McCain lost all dignity and took a cheap shot at Moore ensuring F9/11 makes even more money, Guiliani ratcheted up the negativity and attacks on Kerry (who would have thought it was possible?), and Arnold Schwarzennegar talked about how he watched Humphrey and Nixon and decided Nixon stood for his values *snicker* - despite the fact Nixon never debated Humphrey in the 1968 race (nice story though, Arnie).

Today the Republicans, while undoudbtedly worrying about what Cheney may say in his speech, try to beat Ron Reagan in the party-crossing guests category with Democratic senator Zell Miller who is endorsing Bush. Slate analyses Zell pretty well in this article so I won't do it here. I will, however, leave you with what has probably been his biggest flip-flop.

"My job tonight is an easy one: to present to you one of this nation's authentic heroes, one of this party's best-known and greatest leaders -- and a good friend. In his 16 years in the Senate, John Kerry has fought against government waste and worked hard to bring some accountability to Washington. Early in his Senate career in 1986, John signed on to the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Deficit Reduction Bill, and he fought for balanced budgets before it was considered politically correct for Democrats to do so. John has worked to strengthen our military, reform public education, boost the economy and protect the environment." -- U.S. Senator Zell Miller (Remarks to the Democratic Party of Georgia Jefferson Jackson Dinner 2001)
