House creates new panel to study global warming

On the heels of a new scientific report that says global warming could leave hundreds of millions without water, House Democrats created a special panel Thursday to study and offer recommendations on how to deal with global warming. The Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, advanced by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, will consist of nine Democrats and six Republicans and will be chaired by Rep. Edward Markey. It was approved on a vote of 269-150. A majority of Republicans voted against it, of course.

This is a great first step, but it is still a first step. However, it is encouraging to finally have some lawmakers in power who take the issue seriously.

On a related note, Al Gore will be testifying before Congress on March 21st on the issue of global warming. He is asking for people to electronically sign postcards to their representatives which he will deliver when he speaks.
