Yes, conservatives are smiling about the fact they still have so much influence (in the Senate) despite the fact that only about a fourth of the American people agree with them and their agenda.Also, Kristol's election histories aren't really applicable. Clinton was a sitting president running for re-election in '96, 2008 is an open race. He points to Democratic takeover of the Senate in 1986 and how Dukkakis still lost, but what about Carter's win in '76 after the Democratic takeover in '74? Even John Warner said the other day 2008 will be a bad year for Republicans, the question is how bad.
