Nice

Remember that number I cited to last month, showing the Dallas Mavericks as having one of the softer defenses in the league? Well, they upended that performance last night against Detroit while they were in the process of blowing the Pistons out of the water, cranking out 121.4 points per 100 possessions, higher than Phoenix's average of 115 this season (or 110.5, depending who you listen to) and holding Detroit to 93.4 points per 100 possessions, lower even than Boston's 96.7 for the season (or 93.1, again, depending on who you listen to.) In other words, they were better than-on average-Phoenix's offense and Boston's defense. That my friends, is a recipe for many, many victories if they can keep it up. Detroit is in the middle of a tough stretch of games, and this one was at home, but still, games like this will cement Dallas as one of the legitimate contenders for the NBA championship this season. I won't be sold on not trading for a point guard or big man until the Mavs win it all, but I'm a lot happier now that they appear to be taking the regular season seriously.

UPDATE: In other Mavs related news, OMG they lost to these guys?
