The After Effects of Ike

It seemed that the Texas coast had weathered the worst once the skies cleared Saturday evening, but now it appears that the city of Galveston and Galveston island have suffered an incredible amount of damage at the hands of the Hurricane Ike. Entire neighborhoods in the area of Bolivar Peninsula and Crystal Beach have been obliterated, and the city of Galveston is in no position to provide basic services for those who dared to stay behind as power, water and sewer services have all failed. City officials have asked residents not to return yet, and in fact people are steadily streaming off of the island due to the worsening conditions. Rescuers have only today begun streaming into the hardest hit areas on the island, and though the death toll remains low there are concerns that it could rise as searches of destroyed homes begin.
