Legislative Update IX

Congress approved a landmark conservation bill that would set aside about 2 million acres -- parks, rivers, streams, desert, forest and trails -- in nine states as new wilderness and render them off limits to oil and gas drilling and other development. President Obama is expected to sign it into law next week.

The Senate also passed a national service bill that triples the size of the AmeriCorps and broadly expand incentives for students and seniors to give back to their communities. The House passed it last week.

And House and Senate panels approved a President Obama's general budget blueprint.

The third time being the charm, Gary Locke was confirmed as Secretary of Commerce. Two science posts were also filled.
