The Dallas Mavericks opened the season tonight in Cleveland with a thorough dismantling of last season's Eastern Conference champions the Cavaliers, routing them 92-74 and holding LeBron James to no points in the first half and 10 points in the game. You couldn't ask for a much better result than that in the first game, especially given how the season ended. Defensively the Mavs looked extremely tough, and all around they looked more in tune and faster than the Cavs, who they dominated at both ends of the floor. I had hoped the Mavs would engage in a more energetic pursuit of Kobe and yes, it's only one game, but just maybe they'll do alright this season.
UPDATE: I'm not the only one who thinks so. Perhaps my cautious optimism is justified.
